Meet PainPod Ambassador, Lakeisha Patterson aka Lucky! Lucky is an inspiring Australian Paralympic Champion Swimmer from Queensland who made her first games in Rio 2016 at just 17 years old. Rio is one of Lucky's biggest swimming highlights, taking home 6 medals; 2 gold, 2 WR, 3 silver and 1 bronze. In 2018, she competed in her 2nd Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, winning 2 gold medals in the 50m Freestyle S8 and 100m Freestyle S9 where she competed in the next class up. This particular event is incredibly special to Lucky as it was the first time her family were able to watch her compete at a major international meet. Lucky was also named an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) recipient in 2017 which was a major achievement.
When COVID hit, pools across the country had shut, leaving Lucky to experience moments of stress, angst and uncertainty for the future and looming prospect of Paralympics, especially with her usual routine and favourite form of therapy being thrown out the window. However, during these tough times, Lucky was able to rely on her PainPod to ease muscle stiffness while she adapted to land-based training at home for the first few weeks before she could get back into the water. In addition to aiding recovery, Lucky loves to use the PainPod 3 and PainPod M throughout the week as a way to boost her mood. She also eases her daily pain and fatigue from Cerebral Palsy with the PainPod and finds it extremely easy and convenient to use within her busy lifestyle. "I cannot recommend PainPod highly enough! It has been a lifesaver to me in helping ensure I am able to get the most out of my day and live life to the absolute fullest. The array of products and accessories are perfect for anyone and their needs."
Having now established a new training routine and a relaxed outlook to overcoming obstacles along the way, Lucky is even more motivated to work towards her goals; continuing to compete for Australia internationally at the benchmark events such as the Paralympics, World Championships and Pan Pacific Championships well into the future. She also strives to motivate others to get into the water and practice water safety.
With more life experience gained, Lucky would have advised her younger self if given the chance to not stress about things that are out of her control and to stop comparing herself to others. "I have learnt that absolutely everybody is different and has unique qualities that make us who we are today. Embrace those qualities and use them as your strengths to achieve whatever you desire! Life is hard, but so are you, and with the right attitude, resilience, and commitment you can achieve absolutely anything!"
For anyone wishing to get into competitive swimming, Lucky's advice to you is, "You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great. Just give it a go, you never know what you can achieve unless you give it a crack! Whilst it is definitely hard and challenging at times, it is so much fun and rewarding getting to meet new people and discover new places - the whole journey is exhilarating!"
